Frequently Asked Questions

What is the study about?

For this study, we're interested in how moms' and babies' moods influence each other over time. We're also interested in how babies learn to pay attention to different types of facial expressions and how this may relate to mom's own moods.

How old does my baby have to be to participate?

6-12 months old.

Where is it?

The study will be in on the campus of 天美传媒. To help yourself find the building, you can put 鈥淐learview Hall, Vestal, NY鈥 into (or use 鈥111 Clearview Drive, Vestal, NY鈥 for ). You can also stop at the Information Booth located on the right just after you enter campus, or you can call us at 607-777-3304. If you will be driving here, parking is available at the top of the hill, to the right of the building (Lot Z). Please park in Lot Z (up the hill to the right of the building) rather than in the bigger lot (Lot M) in front of the building (you can get ticketed if you park in Lot M rather than at a meter in Lot Z).

What will each appointment look like?

Each time you come in, we'll ask you to complete some questionnaires and interviews. Your baby will also do a couple computer tasks where we show them pictures of faces with different emotions and see which ones they look at. We will also ask you and your baby to play together for a few minutes. Each visit will take around 1.5 hours.

How long will I be a part of the study?

You will come in for an appointment every 3 months over the course of a year (5 total appointments over 12 months).

What do I get for participating?

For each study visit, you'll receive $50 cash and your baby will receive a small gift (you'll receive $250 for completing the full study).

When will I find out the results of the study?

If you would like, we can send you an email with updates when data collection has been completed and results are published!

Do I need to bring anything with me for my appointment?

Part of the study will focus on how you and your baby鈥檚 bodies react to each other while you are playing together, so we鈥檒l need to put some sensors on each of you (e.g., collar bone, bottom of ribs). So, you probably don鈥檛 want to wear a dress or face makeup to the appointment or have your baby in a onesie. Also, if possible, please bring some finger food (e.g., Cheerios) or a bottle? This will help things go more smoothly and keep your baby from getting too tired. Finally, you may want to bring some small toys that your baby can play with while you are filling out questionnaires so they don鈥檛 get bored.

Will my baby be with me the whole time?

Yes, your baby will be in the same room with you for the entirety of the appointment!

I have more questions, how can I get those answered?
